After walking back to the car, Baker scratched the first ticket and Maddes scratched the second. The second turned out to be the top prize winner. Maddes handed it to Baker, saying “I think you just won a million dollars!” Baker will receive $50,000 a year less federal and state withholding from the North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) for the next 19 years. She already has received her first check and plans to use it for her college expenses. Baker’s mother joked that it was bad timing, since the tuition bill had already been paid. She added with a laugh that Mary hadn’t offered to pay them back yet. Linda Ellis of Wilmington says her husband didn’t believe her when she told him she’d won $800,000 playing Powerball. Ellis bought a ticket for the Sept. 6 drawing and paid an additional dollar to Power Play it and have the chance to multiply her non-jackpot winnings. Her ticket ended up matching all five white balls. Since the multiplier for the drawing was 4, it increased her winnings from $200,000 to $800,000! Ellis purchased her winning ticket at Scotchman #35 on Market Street in Wilmington. She says she will share her winnings with her children. The new “Deal or No Deal” instant scratch-off game is popular among players, and two top prizes were claimed last week. Keshia Edmonds of Raleigh says she watches the “Deal or No Deal” television show faithfully every week, and that’s why she decided to buy a ticket. Edmonds says she won $40 with her first ticket, and bought a few more. The last ticket she scratched uncovered the $100,000 top prize. Edmonds purchased her winning ticket at Cruizers #28 on Six Forks Road in Raleigh. She plans to buy a new car with her winnings. Co-workers Jonathan Patterson and Maria De los Angeles Diaz of Louisburg were at the Durham Mobil on Guess Road in Durham when they decided to buy a few “Deal or No Deal” tickets together. They were both surprised and overjoyed when one revealed the top prize of $100,000! De los Angeles Diaz plans to use her half of the winnings to pay off her car loan and put a down payment on a home. Jody Martin of Zebulon went to pick up a new washer and dryer at a local home improvement store, but it wasn’t ready yet so he and his family went to the nearby Food Lion on Capital Boulevard in Wake Forest to go grocery shopping. While there, the “$150,000 Carolina Anniversary Cash” instant scratch-off ticket caught his eye so he bought one. It revealed itself to be a $150,000 winner! Martin plans to take his family on vacation with his winnings. Randy Robinson of Hendersonville is the latest big “Carolina Cash 5” winner. This morning, he claimed the $119,097 top prize from the August 18 drawing. Robinson says his wife picked the numbers for the ticket based on the numbers of their home address. Robinson purchased the winning ticket at Mountain Energy on Asheville Highway in Hendersonville. He and his wife plan to invest some of the money for their retirement. Two recent “Carolina Cash 5” top prizes have yet to be claimed. One ticket in the Sept. 2 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing matched all five white balls and is worth $168,716! The ticket was sold at Han-Dee Hugo on East Williams Road in Apex. In addition, one ticket in the Sept. 6 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing matched all five white balls and is worth $149,571! The ticket was sold at East West Store on U.S. 70 West in Valdese. In the Saturday, Sept. 6, Powerball drawing, there were six big winners. In addition to Linda Ellis’ $800,000 ticket, five tickets in the drawing matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball. Two of these tickets were Power Played and are worth $40,000 each. These tickets were sold at Cruizers #43 on South Fordham Boulevard in Chapel Hill and Mountain Energy on Allman Drive in Franklin. Three of the five tickets that matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball were not Power Played and are worth $10,000 each. These tickets were sold at Kangaroo Express #3787 on Burlington Road in Whitsett, Lowes Food #188 on Guilford College Road in Jamestown, and Big Daddy’s #2 C&W Convenience on Burkemont Avenue in Morganton. A total of 47,848 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in Saturday’s drawing, ranging from $800,000 down to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $1,323,461. No one matched all five white balls plus the Powerball to win the jackpot, so the jackpot for the Wednesday, Sept. 10, Powerball drawing is an estimated $102 million. The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out more than $12.5 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Tuesday, Sept. 2. Also since Tuesday, “Carolina Cash 5” players have won more than $486,000 and “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more than $1.4 million in prizes.
