Lanigan purchased a ticket for the Oct. 4 Powerball drawing at the Cornelius BP on Statesville Road in Cornelius. It matched all five white balls to win the top non-jackpot prize. When he had his ticket validated at the same retailer, Lanigan said the cashier told him someone had won $200,000. Upon scanning the ticket, she then exclaimed, “It was you!” Lanigan says he wants to tell the whole world that he’s won. When he claimed his prize at the North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) headquarters on Tuesday, he said he’d already told friends and family in New York, Mississippi and Australia. Lanigan plans to put the prize money in the bank for retirement. Three tickets in last night’s Powerball drawing matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball. The normal payout for this combination is $10,000; however one ticket was Power Played and is worth $40,000 since the Power Play number for the drawing was 4. This ticket was sold at Five Points Grocery and Grill on North N.C. 62 in Burlington. The other two tickets that matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball are worth $10,000 each. They were sold at Home Run Food Mart on SJK Powell Boulevard in Whiteville and Sam’s Mart on Crab Tree Road in Waynesville. A total of 31,893 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Wednesday, Oct. 8, Powerball drawing, ranging from $40,000 down to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $357,805. No one matched all five white balls plus the Powerball to win the jackpot, so the jackpot for the Saturday, Oct. 11, Powerball drawing is an estimated $20 million. The “Carolina Cash 5” top prize continues to roll higher. The top prize for tonight’s drawing is $545,000! The top prize has been rolling since Sept. 28. To win the top prize, a player must match all five numbers drawn. Oct. 14 is when “Drawing Entry” tickets from the “$130 Million Blockbuster” instant scratch-off game must be received if players want to be a part of the first preliminary drawing for a chance to win $50,000 a year for life. Only tickets that reveal “Drawing Entry” can be entered. The drawing will be held Oct. 21. Two tickets will be drawn. The winners will receive $1,500 each and will be the first two finalists in the grand prize bonus drawing to win $50,000 a year for life. The NCEL has paid out nearly $4 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Monday, Oct. 6. Also since Monday, “Carolina Cash 5” players have won more than $163,000 and “Carolina Pick 3” players have won nearly $765,000 in prizes.
