Dennis Bowen says he “nearly passed out” when he realized that his ticket was one of the winners, but he knows exactly how he’ll spend the winnings. He and his wife recently purchased land, and they plan to use the $411,988 prize to build a house. Bowen purchased the winning ticket at Smart Stop Mini Mart on Central Avenue in Butner. The other winning ticket that matched all five white balls in the Oct. 11 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing was sold at Circle K #6139 on Walnut Street in Cary. That ticket has yet to be claimed. Roberta Pittman of Poughkeepsie, New York, plans to help family members and take a vacation with her recent Powerball winnings. She purchased a ticket for the Sept. 24 Powerball drawing and it matched all five white balls to win $200,000. Pittman says her adult daughter learned that her mother had won the top non-jackpot prize by checking the numbers on the North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) Web site. She had purchased her winning ticket at Cruizers on Roxboro Road in Durham. Jeremiah Martinez of Eden was at home when he scratched off the “Deal or No Deal” instant ticket he’d purchased. He says he didn’t believe it when he saw that it revealed the top $100,000 prize. Martinez called his mother to tell her he’d won. He plans to use his winnings to supplement his income. Martinez purchased his winning ticket at J-Mart of Eden, Inc. #1 on East Stadium Drive in Eden. In Saturday night’s Powerball drawing, three tickets matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball. The normal payout for this combination is $10,000; however one ticket was Power Played. Since the Power Play number for the drawing was four, this ticket is worth $40,000. It was sold at Blue Ridge Tobacco on Cloverdale Avenue in Winston-Salem. The other two tickets were not Power Played and are worth $10,000 each. They were sold at Sambobs on South Main Street in Waynesville and Wake Forest BP on North White Street in Wake Forest. A total of 40,741 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Saturday, Oct. 11, Powerball drawing, ranging from $40,000 down to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $451,406. No one matched all five white balls plus the Powerball to win the jackpot, so the jackpot for the Wednesday, Oct. 15, Powerball drawing is an estimated $25 million. The NCEL has paid out more than $3.7 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Thursday, Oct. 9. Also since Thursday, “Carolina Cash 5” players have won more than $1.1 million and “Carolina Pick 3” players have won nearly $685,000 in prizes.
