It all started when Overby told her adult daughter that she was going out to the grocery store and to get her car washed. Ward handed her mother five dollars and said that while she was out to get them a lottery ticket together. Before making it to the grocery store, Overby stopped by the Stop & Shop #1 on Sunset Avenue and bought one “$130 Million Blockbuster” instant scratch-off ticket, a $10 ticket with the top prize of $1 million. As Overby sat in her car, she scratched off the ticket and it revealed the top prize! Overby never made it to the grocery store that day. She went straight home and called her daughter to tell her the good news. In fact, Overby still had her grocery list with her when she claimed her prize. The lucky mother and daughter aren’t sure what they’ll do with their prize, but they do have a few tentative plans. Overby says she has always wanted to go on a cruise to Hawaii, and Ward says maybe she’ll take her family to Disney World. The “$130 Million Blockbuster” instant scratch-off game is the highest payout instant scratch-off ticket that the NCEL has introduced to date. There are still five of the $1 million prizes available. The $1 million prize is paid in 20 annual installments of $50,000 (less Federal and State withholdings). In addition, toward the end of the game there will be a drawing for one prize of $50,000 a year “for life” with a minimum payout of 20 years*. For Bernadet Atkinson of Rocky Mount, “Carolina Cash 5” is his lucky game. Atkinson bought a ticket for the Oct. 25 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing and says he was both excited and nervous when he realized his ticket matched all five white balls drawn to win the $280,975 top prize. The first person Atkinson called with the good news was his wife, but he says she didn’t believe him. Once they came to Raleigh to claim the prize together at the North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) headquarters, though, the disbelief went away. Atkinson purchased his winning ticket at JMS Food Mart on North Raleigh Street in Rocky Mount. He says he will use the money to take a family vacation, and then put the rest in savings. Two tickets in last night’s Powerball drawing matched four out of five white balls plus the Powerball. One of the two tickets was Power Played, which increased the $10,000 prize to $20,000. This ticket was sold at Bobby’s Quick Stop on Southwest Morganton Boulevard in Lenoir. The other ticket was not Power Played and is worth $10,000. This ticket was sold at Kerr Drug #317 on Skeet Club Road in High Point. A total of 31,556 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Wednesday, Oct. 29 Powerball drawing, ranging from $20,000 down to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $213,987. One ticket in Pennsylvania matched all five white balls plus the Powerball to win the jackpot, so the jackpot for the Saturday, Nov. 1, Powerball drawing is an estimated $15 million. The NCEL has paid out more than $4.3 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Monday, Oct. 27. Also since Monday, “Carolina Cash 5” players have won more than $82,000 and “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more than $933,000 in prizes.
