“I could not believe it,” Parton says of the shock he felt when hearing the good news. Parton, who received $680,007.40 after taxes, says he will help others with his winnings and also take a trip to the Grand Canyon. He bought his winning ticket at Mountain Energy on South Main Street in Waynesville. A stop for some gas and a soda was how Don Callahan of Wake Forest learned that he’d won $200,000 playing Powerball. Callahan says he had the clerk check his Powerball ticket from the Nov. 4 drawing and was told he would have to claim it in person at the North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) headquarters in Raleigh. Upon comparing the winning numbers to those on his ticket, Callahan realized that he had matched all five white balls and that his ticket was worth $200,000! “This is a life changing day for me,” Callahan said when he claimed his prize. “I haven’t been this happy in a long time.” Callahan, who received $136,000.32 after taxes, says he plans to invest his winnings and use some of it for his son’s college education. For fun he says he may buy a new television and says he also has his eye on a used BMW. Saturday was a lucky night for Powerball and “Carolina Cash 5” players. In the Nov. 7 Powerball drawing, one ticket matched all five white balls and is worth $200,000. The ticket was sold at Wilco on Richlands Highway in Jacksonville. It has yet to be claimed. A total of 41,917 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Saturday, Nov. 7 Powerball drawing ranging from $200,000 to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $597,938. Because no one matched all five white balls plus the Powerball, the jackpot for the Wednesday, Nov. 11 Powerball drawing is an estimated $96 million. In the Nov. 7 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing, one ticket matched all five numbers drawn and is worth $177,917. The ticket was sold at Capi’s Deli at Airport Boulevard on Chapel Hill Road in Morrisville and has yet to be claimed. The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out more than $6.5 million total in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Thursday, Nov. 5. Also since Thursday, “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more than $753,000. “Carolina Pick 4” players have won more than $335,000 and 19 tickets won the top prize of $5,000. “Carolina Cash 5” players have won nearly $310,000.
