Hubert Thompson, a truck driver from Whiteville, delivered a $200,000 prize to his retirement account Friday after winning the first top prize in the new Blazing 7’s game.

Thompson, who’s been driving trucks for 41 years, said he likes to try new games so when he saw the $5 Blazing 7’s tickets at Time Saver Food Store on Washington Street in Whiteville he bought some. He said he won $5 on the first ticket and then $200,000 on the second.

“This was a blessing,” Thompson said. “Just like everybody else, I’ve always said I’m going to hit the big one. It was my time.”

Thompson said he plans to retire in a year or two so he will save his prize for retirement.

After tax withholdings, he took home $141,501. The Blazing 7’s game started on Tuesday with four top prizes of $200,000. Three more remain to be claimed.

SHIRLEY LOUISE B. - The NC Lottery should be shut down because you didn't win on a second chance drawing? Or because your comment wasn't posted?

Congratulations Lester!!! Hopefully mine time will be soon. Also can someone tell me the exact time you have to be logged on for the second chance drawing??? I’ve entered many tickets and won zipped. I thought it was before 11:59. I’m confused.NC Lottery
Hi Olethia, you do not have to be logged in to win a Second Chance drawing.

7/09/2019 04:34 - Shirley louise B.

Congratulations Mr.Thompson!!!!

I have to object to the 2nd chance/lucky rewards answers that have been given lately. I have had thousands....yes thousands of entries into alot of them and have never won. I realize it only takes 1 but that doesn't make it easier to keep dredging away entering entries. But who knows right???

7/08/2019 05:26 - BARRY C.

I’m surprised and grateful you did reply to my question, so thank you...But, I’ve looked in the bylaws of the games in Pa and Florida and it lists the printed number of tickets in a 5 dollar game.I believe your numbers reflects the number of tickets out of (approximately)13 million that are assigned a dollar amount, winning ticket you might say. I can’t imagine any reason NC would print 2.4 times less then other states. I hope I am wrong but I’ve seen it with the eyeball test. :-) NC Lottery
Hey Barry, The number we shared with you was total printed winning and non-winning tickets. We can't speak for other lotteries, but each game we release will have a different number of total tickets. It can very based on how long the game should last--for example, games like Supreme Riches have many more tickets printed since it's a longer-lasting game and a holiday themed game might have fewer because it is only meant to last through the holiday season. Hope this helps explain things a bit more.

Congratulations sir. Well done! I just wish you could’ve walked away with the $200,000 not asked of the scavengers got their part.

Congratulations Mr.Thompson??. You sound like a man who knows what he want in life. You have worked a long time as a trucker. I commend you. And although we think you should retire, you know what your plans are so do what’s best for you. And most of all Let the good Lord order your steps. I have spoke my blessings into existence also, and I believe it’s on the way !!! God bless you and yours. Enjoy your blessings.

Hey there Jim, The lottery's finance department does, conduct an end-of-game reconciliation process (we often refer to this here on the blog as a "post-game audit") after the claim deadline passes for every instant game. That process verifies total sales, total payouts, and accounts for unclaimed prizes at every level and any inventory of returned, damaged, stolen, or missing packs of tickets. The reconciliation is reviewed by the lottery's internal auditors, who report to the state-appointed lottery commission. The blog team does not have detailed information on past audits, but you are welcome to inquire about specific dollar amounts by submitting a public information request to player.info@lotterync.net.

7/06/2019 07:40 - JIM B.

3 Questions please. When you say the instant game tickets are audited (after) the run is over-do you actually scratch the remaining tickets off physically to see if the remaining amount left is as advertised? If not then you would have to admit there really is a manifest list of ticket #s to dollar amounts of that list. And if so have you in your verifying method ever notice some of the bigger prizes (10,000.00)+ missing in your inventory but not claimed by the public? Any dollar amounts you care to share? Tx NC Lottery

Hey NC lottery do you calculate the number of losing tickets printed by subtracting the number of winning tickets from the amount of total tickets printed? NC Lottery
Hi Tiffany, To calculate that amount, yes, you'd need to figure out how many total tickets were printed by multiplying the odds of winning the top prize by the amount of top prizes. Then, add up all prizes at all levels and subtract it from the first amount.

7/06/2019 12:46 - Celia G.

It appears that you have to be a NC resident to win the 2nd Chance Drawing. I have entered in these draws for the past 7years.NC Lottery
Sorry to hear you aren't having more luck, Kevin. However, you do not have to be a NC resident in order to enter or win our second-chance drawings. As long as you purchased your ticket while in NC, you are eligible. The truth is, it takes a lot of luck to win a lottery prize--many of our second-chance drawings receive millions of entries, and while your odds will vary based on the total entries, all it takes is one lucky entry to win. We wish you all the best.

7/06/2019 09:05 - Berry B.

God Bless u,Mr.H.T.!!

7/06/2019 08:07 - Troy W.

NCEL, can we find out how many entries there were for June's monthly drawing as well as the second chance drawings for the month?NC Lottery
Absolutely. Here are the numbers from our July 1st report. Slide Into Summer had 2,337,725 entries; the final 25 Win Quick Cash had 180,212 entries; Colossal Cash second-chance had 1,129,372 entries; Wheel of Fortune had 231,842 entries; and MGM Casino Cash had 143,275 entries.

7/06/2019 08:02 - William R.

always wondered! that when a prize says that it is for example:$200,000! it is really not! after taxes! kinda deceiving and spoils the sound of what seems the real win is like a million dollars is not really a million dollars after taxes too! disappointing really but your still getting a somewhat large sum! just saying my opinion!!NC Lottery
A job that pays a $50,000 salary has taxes withheld on it as well. By law lottery winnings are taxed as income too!

7/06/2019 07:58 - Sheila I.

Have the lucke rewards and 2nd Chance drawings haven't happened or posted any winner notified what's going on?NC Lottery
Hi Jennifer. Sorry about that. The drawings were held as scheduled on July 3. The winners have been notified, too, but the July 4th holiday may have caused a delay in updating the website to reflect that. It should be updated soon.

7/05/2019 05:36 - BARRY C.

It’s very disturbing seeing the amount of top prizes(4)Now you look at the games printed tickets of around 13,000,000 million x 5 dollars = 65,000,000 million. You’re giving out peanuts total of 800,000 top prizes.Additionally you count a 5 dollar winning ticket into the odds of 1 in 4.25 percentage, It’s NOT a win, you just got your money back. What are the real odds? 1 in 15? Is much more like it.Im sure this wont be answered or posted for that matter. NC Lottery
Hey Barry, An easy way to figure out how many tickets were printed for a game is to multiply the amount of top prizes by the odds of winning that prize. The Blazing 7's game had 5.04 million tickets printed. Each time you buy a ticket, you have to beat the odds in order to win a prize. All instant games are audited before and after the game to ensure the game and stated odds are as advertised.
