RALEIGH – Angel Roberson, a nurse from Washington, N.C., now knows what it feels like to be on a lucky streak, winning big and small this week while playing instant games in the N.C. Education Lottery.

Roberson’s winning streak began Thursday night when her boyfriend, Mike Cutler, brought her three instant tickets. She won $5 on the second ticket and then $150,000 on the third, a ticket from the lottery’s $150,000 Grand game. On the way to claim the big prize on Friday, Roberson won an additional $50 with tickets she bought in Greenville and then another $77 with tickets she bought at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

“This has been a lucky week,” Roberson said as she held her souvenir big check for the $150,000 win. “I thought I might win $10,000 or $20,000. I was hoping. But nothing like this.”

After taxes, Roberson received $102,001. She said she planned to share the winnings with her boyfriend. She said she would use her share to pay bills. Her boyfriend, a construction worker, said he might buy a new car, a new truck or a new motorcycle.

The winning $150,000 Grand ticket was purchased at Mike’s Mini Mart on Highway 33 East in Chocowinity. As of Friday afternoon, the game, which launched Sept. 6, had three top prizes of $150,000 remaining to be claimed.

From March 30, 2006 through June 30, 2011, Beaufort County players have won more than $27 million in lottery prizes and county retailers have earned more than $3.7 million in commissions on ticket sales.

During the same time period, Beaufort County education programs have received more than $8.9 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds benefit teacher salaries, school construction, need-based college scholarships and prekindergarten programs.

To date, the N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $2.11 billion for the education initiatives it serves statewide.
