The lucky winner who won half of the $114 million jackpot in Friday’s Mega Millions drawing bought the winning ticket at a Greenville convenience store.

The retailer selling the winning ticket was the Kangaroo Express located at 1531 Southeast Greenville Boulevard in Greenville. The store is eligible to receive a $50,000 retailer incentive award for selling the winning jackpot ticket.

A media availability will be held today from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the store.

The owner of the ticket has yet to come forward. The winner has 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim the prize at NCEL headquarters in Raleigh.

Based on sales for the Friday drawing, the estimated amount of the jackpot rose to $114 million. There were two winning tickets that matched all six numbers to win the jackpot, one here in North Carolina and one in California. Each ticket is worth $57 million as an annuity paid out over 26 years or $42.2 million as a lump sum payment before federal and state taxes are withheld.

The win is the second time that a North Carolina ticket has claimed the jackpot since the Education Lottery added the Mega Millions game on Jan. 31, 2010. Four months later, on May 28, Mike Manheim, a retired businessman from Greensboro, won a $12 million jackpot.

Since the game was launched here, North Carolina has had $113 million in Mega Million ticket sales. The game has paid out more than $41 million in prizes to players, earned $7.9 million in commissions for retailers, and provided $45.4 million for the education initiatives that the N.C. Education Lottery serves.

Mega Millions and Powerball are multistate jackpot games. Together, they provide players the chance to enter four jackpot drawings each week. Mega Millions drawings are held on Tuesdays and Fridays and Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The jackpot for Tuesday’s Mega Millions drawing will reset to $12 million or $8.8 million if taken as a lump sum. The jackpot for Wednesday’s Powerball drawing is an estimated $58 million or $36.7 million if taken as a lump sum.
