RALEIGH – Durham resident Cheryl Weaver plans to put the $104,472 prize she won playing Carolina Cash 5 into a savings account. Weaver matched all five of her numbers, based on a series of birthdays and anniversaries, in the Sept. 10 drawing to win the jackpot.

Weaver was at home on Sunday morning when she learned of her big win.

“I woke up and checked the numbers on my phone,” she said. “I looked again on the computer. I told my husband that we’d won and started jumping up and down.”

Weaver purchased her winning ticket at the Kerr Drug on North Duke Street in Durham. After taxes, she took home a check for $71,041. Weaver said she plays Cash 5 because the odds are better than the other jackpot-style games. The odds of matching all five white balls to win the Cash 5 jackpot are 1 in 575,757.

“This really came at a good time,” Weaver said Monday as she claimed her prize at N.C. Education Lottery headquarters in Raleigh. “I feel great.”

Weaver’s win made her the second big Cash 5 winner from Durham in less than a week. In the Sept. 5 drawing, Richard Sutton of Durham matched all five numbers and split the $261,284 jackpot with a ticket purchased in Greensboro.

From March 30, 2006 through June 30, 2010, Durham County players have won more than $80.9 million in lottery prizes and county retailers have earned more than $10.2 million in commissions on ticket sales.

During the same time period, Durham County education programs have received more than $31.3 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds benefit teacher salaries, school construction, need-based college scholarships and prekindergarten programs.

To date, the N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $2 billion for the education initiatives it serves statewide.
