RALEIGH – Michael Wallace, a retail associate from Fayetteville, said he’ll use a $200,000 lottery prize to take care of his wife and family, and maybe buy a new truck.
Around 4 p.m. Wednesday, Wallace purchased a $5 Extreme Green ticket at the Kangaroo Express on Bunce Road in Fayetteville and put it in his pocket. Later that evening, while working on his truck at home, he scratched it off and realized he won the top prize. Wallace hurried to his mother’s house to share the good news.
Wallace, who is a stroke survivor, said he was “happy” and “grateful” as he claimed his winnings at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After state and federal taxes were withheld, he received a check for $136,001.
Wallace also said he has three sisters who are teachers in Cumberland County. Through June 30 of last year, Cumberland County education programs received more than $79.4 million in lottery funds, more than $21 million of which paid for 426 teachers’ salaries. To date, the N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $2.2 billion for teachers’ salaries, school construction, need-based college scholarships, and prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds.
As of Thursday afternoon, two top prizes of $200,000 remain unclaimed in the Extreme Green game. On Tuesday, Feb. 21, tickets for another “Green” game will be in stores. Maximum Green, a $10 game, will launch with overall odds of winning of one in 3.28 and seven top prizes of $1 million.
