RALEIGH – Shawmaine Barrett, a resident of West End in Moore County, won $100,000 on a $5 Mega Bucks ticket. She collected her winnings Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. She purchased her winning ticket, worth $68,001 after taxes, at the Kangaroo Express on U.S. 1 South in Southern Pines.

Barrett is the fifth player from Moore County, and the first from West End, to win an instant prize of $100,000 or more playing the lottery. Residents of Carthage, Foxfire Village, Southern Pines and Jackson Springs have also won large prizes.

Since the lottery began through June 30 of last year, Moore County education programs received more than $11.7 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds pay for teachers' salaries in grades K-3, school construction, need-based college scholarships, and prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds. To date, The N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $2.2 billion for these initiatives statewide.
