RALEIGH – Mark Tobin, a construction worker from Wake Forest, said he will use the $250,000 he won in Friday’s Mega Millions drawing to buy a car, help his family and for savings.

Tobin’s lucky Quick Pick ticket matched five of the six numbers in the drawing to win the prize. He bought the ticket Thursday night at the 74 Junction in Forest City after leaving his work site to come home for the Easter holiday.

“I was thinking, ‘Wow. I won $250,000,’’’ said Tobin, recalling the moment he learned of his win Saturday morning while checking the winning Mega Millions numbers online. “I thought I would win the big one. I still think I will win the big one.”

After taxes were withheld, Tobin received $170,000.

“I’m going to buy my daughter and myself a car,” Tobin said. “I’m going to help my parents with some cash. And I’m going to invest the rest.”

Through June 30 of last year, Wake County education programs received more than $145.8 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds pay for teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, need-based college scholarships, and prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds.

To date, the N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $2.2 billion for these initiatives statewide.
