RALEIGH – Karen McCullough of Carolina Beach became the second person to claim a $100,000 prize playing the new Carolina Black game.

McCullough purchased her lucky ticket at the Sea Merchants Inc. on Cape Fear Boulevard in Carolina Beach. After taxes were withheld, she received a check for $68,001.

As of Monday afternoon, four more top prizes remain to be claimed in the Carolina Black game. Tickets in the game went on sale June 5 and cost $5 each.

Since the lottery began through June 30, 2011, New Hanover County education programs received more than $32.6 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds pay for teachers’ salaries in grades K-3 to help keep class size low, school construction, need-based college scholarships and prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds.

To date, the N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $2.35 billion for these initiatives statewide.
