RALEIGH – Jordney Smith, a resident of Moncure in Chatham County, plans to use the $200,000 he won playing Extreme Green to invest in a business.

Smith was at home when he realized he had won the game’s top prize.

“I thought they had sold me a fake ticket,” Smith said. “It is still hard to believe.”

Smith collected a check for $136,001 after state and federal taxes were withheld. He purchased his winning ticket at Ray’s Supermarket on Old U.S. 1 in Moncure.

“This is going to give me a change for the better,” Smith said as he collected his winnings. “I’ll still be me, but now I’m going to have some fun.”

As of Monday afternoon, two more top prizes remain to be claimed in the Extreme Green game.

Since the lottery began through June 30, 2011, Chatham County education programs received more than $11 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds pay for teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, need-based college scholarships and financial aid.

To date, the N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $2.35 billion for these initiatives statewide.
