RALEIGH – James Douglas of High Point said he’s “just happy” to be a $100,000 lottery winner. Tuesday afternoon, he purchased a Super Lucky 7’s ticket for $5 from the Pantry Shop on West English Road in High Point and scratched it.

“I just happened to win – that’s all,” he said.

Douglas, who worked for 35 years building fiberglass boats before retiring in 2006, said he plans to pay bills and the mortgage with his after-tax winnings of $68,001.

The Super Lucky 7’s game started April 24 with five top prizes of $100,000. Douglas beat odds of 1 in 816,000 to win a top prize. Three $100,000 prizes remain unclaimed.

Since the lottery began through June 30 of last year, Guilford County education programs received $102.1 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds pay for teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.

To date, the N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $2.35 billion for these initiatives statewide.
