RALEIGH – William Parker Jr., a resident of Rocky Mount, plans to purchase a home and a new car after winning $150,000 on his 10X the Payout ticket.

Parker was walking home from the grocery store when he scratched off the $5 game’s top prize.

“I was just walking along and scratching the ticket,” Parker said. “When I saw my number, I thought I had at least won my money back. Then I saw how much it was worth and I just stopped in the street and looked at it. I started walking again, then a couple of blocks later I had to look at it again. That’s when it hit me. I just started screaming and yelling. I couldn’t believe it was real.”

After state and federal taxes were withheld, Parker received a check worth $102,001. He purchased his lucky ticket at the Kangaroo Express on Fairview Road in Rocky Mount.

As of Tuesday afternoon, four top prizes of $150,000 and many other prizes remain unclaimed in the game.

Ticket sales for games such as instant scratch-offs have enabled the lottery to raise more than $2.58 billion for education initiatives statewide. Since the lottery began through June 30, 2012, Edgecombe County education programs received more than $15.4 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds pay for teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
