RALEIGH – A Catawba County man is a $1 million Powerball winner. Humberto Barrios of Newton beat odds of 1 in 5.1 million to match all five white balls, but not the red Powerball, in the Sept. 21 drawing. He purchased the winning ticket at the Kangaroo Express #3026 on N.C. 10 West in Newton. Barrios’ win makes him the 12th North Carolina Powerball player to claim a $1 million prize this year.

Lottery players across North Carolina could win big again in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing. The jackpot annuity value is estimated at $70 million, making the cash option worth $40.1 million. The odds of matching all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 175 million. The drawing will be held at 10:59 p.m.

Ticket sales make it possible for the N.C. Education Lottery to raise money for education programs in all 100 counties. Details about how more than $35.3 million in lottery funds have made a difference in Catawba County are available on the “Where the Money Goes” page on the lottery’s website.
