RALEIGH – Kenneth Florence of Greensboro is the 13th Powerball player in North Carolina to win a $1 million prize this year.

In Wednesday night’s drawing, Florence matched all five white balls but not the red Powerball. Florence purchased his lucky ticket at the Fairway One Stop on South Elm Eugene Street. He beat odds of 1 in 5.1 million to win the $1 million prize.

“When I saw I had won, I felt so much relief that I could take care of the things I need to take care of,” Florence said as he collected his winnings on Thursday. “This money is going to help me as well as others. I’ve been very lucky.”

After state and federal taxes were withheld, Florence received a check for $680,000.

This Saturday’s Powerball jackpot is $133 million if taken as an annuity or $76 million as a lump sum.

Ticket sales for games such as Powerball have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $2.9 billion for education programs statewide. Details on how more than $127.6 million in lottery funds have made a difference in Guilford County are available on the “Where the Money Goes” page on the lottery’s website.
