RALEIGH – Douglas Humphries, a mechanic from Timberlake, said he has played the same set of random numbers in the Carolina Cash 5 game for four years. On Saturday night, his persistence paid off when he matched all five numbers and won the $164,233 jackpot.

“I never change my numbers,” said Humphries, who beat odds of 1 in 575,757 to win the jackpot. “I’m going to keep playing these numbers, as well. In ten years it may happen again, so I might as well keep going with what I’ve got.”

Humphries plans to use his winnings, worth $111,678 after state and federal taxes were withheld, to remodel his home. He purchased his lucky ticket at the Mayo Marina Mart on Virgilina Road in Roxboro.

As of June 2013, the lottery has raised more than $2.9 billion to support education programs. Lottery dollars support teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction and repair projects, prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, college scholarships and financial aid based on need and digital learning initiatives.
