RALEIGH – Carrol Brown of Charlotte plans to use the $150,000 prize he won playing the lottery to purchase a new home.

Brown scratched off the top prize on his $5 Bonus Jackpot ticket, one of five games that went on sale this week, on Wednesday morning. He is the first player to win the game’s top prize.

“I know that new games come out on the first Tuesday of the month, so I thought I’d try one out,” Brown said. “I couldn’t believe I had won. It felt good. Really good.”

Brown received a check for $102,001 after state and federal taxes were withheld. He purchased his lucky ticket at the Stop and Go on South Tryon Street in Charlotte. As of Thursday morning, three top prizes remain to be claimed in the Bonus Jackpot game.

“I’m a lucky guy,” Brown said as he collected his winnings. “I’m happy. What a payday.”

As of June 2013, the lottery has raised more than $2.9 billion to support education programs. Lottery dollars support teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction and repair projects, prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, college scholarships and financial aid based on need and digital learning initiatives.
