RALEIGH – April Solomon, a dry cleaner from Whiteville, claimed the $200,000 top prize she won playing Power 7’s on Monday afternoon.

She scratched off her winning ticket at Hill’s Food Store on JK Powell Boulevard in Whiteville, where she made her lucky purchase.

“I was standing there and I just froze,” Solomon said. “It was a shocker.”

After taxes were withheld, Solomon received a check for $136,001. As of Tuesday morning, two top prizes remain to be claimed in the Power 7’s game.

Ticket sales for games such as Power 7’s have enabled the lottery to raise more than $2.6 billion for education initiatives statewide. Since the lottery began through June 30, 2012, Columbus County education programs received more than $18.3 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds pay for teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
