RALEIGH – Charles Byrd, a construction supervisor from Lumberton, claimed the last of five $100,000 prizes in the Super Lucky 7’s scratch-off game Friday afternoon. He and his wife plan to use the money to renovate their kitchen and take a vacation.

Byrd scratched off his lucky ticket at the Minuteman Food Mart on East 5th Street in Lumberton.

“I started scratching it and I had to sit down right there on the ice cream counter,” said Byrd. “It took me a few minutes to register that I actually won it. Once I calmed myself down, I signed it and said, ‘I won $100,000.’”

After state and federal taxes were withheld, Byrd received a check for $68,000.

Since the lottery began through June 30, 2012, Robeson County education programs received more than $46.9 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds pay for teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, and college scholarships and financial aid based on need.

To date, the N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $2.6 billion for these initiatives statewide.
