RALEIGH – Gregory Wernli of Jacksonville claimed a $1 million Powerball prize on Monday morning. His win makes him the fifth player in North Carolina to claim $1 million or more playing Powerball in 2013.

Wernli matched all five white balls but not the red Powerball in the April 6 drawing. After taxes were withheld, he received a check for $680,000. The winning ticket was sold at the Wilco at 6995 Western Blvd. in Jacksonville.

Wernli had one of 18,102 winning tickets in Saturday’s drawing. In all, Powerball players in North Carolina won a total of $1,134,346.

Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot is an estimated $60 million if taken as an annuity or $38.9 million if taken as a lump sum.

Since the lottery began through June 30, 2012, Onslow County education programs received more than $37.5 million in lottery funds. By law, those funds pay for teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, and college scholarships and financial aid based on need.

To date, the N.C. Education Lottery has raised more than $2.6 billion for these initiatives statewide.
