RALEIGH – Jennifer Quidley, a janitor at a local Montessori school in Belhaven in Beaufort County, plans to use the $200,000 prize she won playing the Break The Bank game to help her grandparents and have a merrier Christmas.

Quidley, 19, bought the lucky $5 ticket on Tuesday at the Moody Mart on Magnolia Drive in Washington. She scratched off the ticket while visiting her grandparents. After state and federal taxes were withheld, Quidley received a check for $138,401.

“I had an extra five dollars so I just told the clerk to hand me a five-dollar ticket,” Quidley said. “There are no words to describe how I felt when I scratched it off. It was just a good feeling.”

The Break The Bank game, which went on sale Sept. 2, provides more chances to win a prize by offering a “Back Scratch” feature that lets players try their luck on the back of the tickets as well as the front. As of Wednesday morning, one more top prize remains to be claimed in the game.

Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.5 billion for the state. North Carolina Education Lottery net proceeds will be used this year to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
