RALEIGH – Shirley and Stanley Davis of Raeford enjoy playing lottery draw games as a couple. Winning $348,078 in Sunday’s Carolina Cash 5 drawing, they said, will help them enjoy retirement together.

Shirley bought the jackpot-winning ticket at the Muncheez Express on Fayetteville Road in Raeford, letting the computer Quick Pick the numbers at random. She watched the drawing on Sunday night and wrote down the winning numbers. Her husband offered to check to see if they had won anything.

“You did it! You did it!” he said. “You won the Cash 5!”

Shirley, a retired accountant, bought the only ticket that beat odds of 1 in 575,757 in the drawing to win the jackpot. The couple of 42 years said they had modest plans for their after-tax winnings of $240,870.

“This makes retirement easier,” Shirley said. “It’s a nice Valentine’s Day present.”

Ticket sales for games such as Carolina Cash 5 have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.19 billion for education programs statewide.
