Derek Sappah of Wake Forest said his lucky win of half of the Cash 5 jackpot on Thursday came just in time to help pay for an Outer Banks wedding in May and to invest in building his small construction company.

Sappah had one of two tickets that matched all of the five winning numbers in the April 17 Cash 5 drawing. His half of the jackpot was $134,425.

“I’m getting married May 17,” Sappah said as he collected his winnings Monday. “This is really going to be a big help. The timing … wow … that was amazing.”

After state and federal taxes were withheld, Sappah received a check for $93,201. His Quick Pick ticket was purchased the day of the drawing at the White Oak Mart on White Oak Road in Garner.

After paying for the wedding, Sappah said he planned to use the rest of his windfall to support his small construction company, which employs 12 people. “I just want to get my business strong,” he said, “because that is really what is going to make me money in life.”

The second half of the $268,850 jackpot has not yet been claimed. The lucky ticket was sold at the Kangaroo Express on Lancaster Avenue in Monroe.

As of December 2013, the lottery has raised more than $3.19 billion to benefit education programs. Lottery dollars support teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction and repair projects, prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, need-based college scholarships and financial aid and digital learning initiatives.
