After a first look, Larry Huffin, a truck driver from Johnston County, was about to throw away his Bonus Jackpot ticket Saturday when he didn’t see any matches. Then, he checked the numbers again and saw one of his numbers, “28”, matched one of the “Jackpot Numbers” on the ticket.

As he scratched away to find out the prize, he said he couldn’t believe all the zeroes he saw in the amount revealed.

“Baby. Baby. Baby. Tell me I’m not seeing things,” Huffin said as he handed the instant ticket to his wife. “She looked at it and said, ‘I think you won $150,000.’”

The purchase of the lucky $5 ticket came at the Kangaroo Express on South Saunders Street in Raleigh where Huffin had stopped to buy some water as he waited to meet a friend.

Huffin said he planned to use his prize money to pay bills and do some home improvement projects. After state and federal taxes were withheld, he received a check for $103,801.

“I’ve been working hard all my life,” Huffin said Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. “This will take a little pressure off me and I will be able to better help my family financially.”

As of December 2013, the lottery has raised more than $3.19 billion to benefit education programs. Lottery dollars support teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction and repair projects, prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, need-based college scholarships and financial aid and digital learning initiatives.
