RALEIGH – Heather Eckard, an EMS worker from Hickory, plans to use the $100,000 she won playing the $120 Million Cash game to purchase a new car and a log cabin in West Virginia.

“I’m totally in shock,” Eckard said as she collected her winnings. “I’ve wanted to move to West Virginia for a while to be closer to my family. Plus I’m going to go hiking all the time.”

After state and federal taxes were withheld, Eckard received a check for $69,203. She purchased the lucky $20 ticket at Cubbard Express on Northeast 16th Street in Hickory.

As of Wednesday morning, one $3 million prize, three $1 million prizes and two $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed in the game.

Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.3 billion for the state. Net proceeds are used for prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, digital learning initiatives, need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
