RALEIGH – Someone who played Powerball in Raleigh won big in last night’s drawing – to the tune of $2 million.

A lucky ticket, sold at the Food Lion on Six Forks Road, beat odds of 1 in 5.1 million to match all five white balls drawn. Because it was a $3 Power Play ticket, what would have been a $1 million prize is worth twice as much. Upon hearing the news, store manager Thomas Cestaros was thrilled.

“I think that’s awesome,” he said. “I know it’s a random event and it could happen anywhere. But just as much as whoever the winner is, I’m floored that the ticket was sold at our store.”

The winning numbers for the drawing were 9-25-42-55-57 for the white balls and 14 for the red Powerball. Players with winning tickets have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim prizes.

Because a ticket sold in Ohio matched all six numbers in Wednesday’s drawing to win the $124.9 million jackpot, the annuity for Saturday’s drawing is reset to $40 million, or $23.4 million if claimed as a lump sum.

Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. every Wednesday and Saturday. The game is played in 42 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. North Carolina has had three Powerball jackpot winners of $74.5 million to $141.4 million.

Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.4 billion for the state. Net proceeds are used for prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, digital learning initiatives, need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
