RALEIGH – Ashby Jordan of Greenville plans to use the $173,578 jackpot he won playing Carolina Cash 5 to save for retirement and take a vacation.

“I checked the numbers on my computer on Saturday morning and almost passed out,” Jordan said. “I know I must have checked the numbers six more times. I was ecstatic then and I still am.”

Jordan’s Quick Pick ticket was one of three that matched all five numbers in the Aug. 8 drawing to split the $520,734 jackpot.

After state and federal taxes were withheld, Jordan received a check for $120,117. One of the other big winners in the drawing, Glen Locklear of Fayetteville, also claimed his $173,578 share on Monday. The owner of the third ticket, sold at the Quik Chek on Sunset Avenue in Asheboro, has yet to come forward.

Jordan purchased the ticket at the Kangaroo Express on Greenville Boulevard in Greenville. The lucky store also sold the $57 million winning Mega Millions ticket to James Jones, a retired banker, in 2011. Jones’ win is the largest Mega Millions prize since the lottery began selling the game in 2010.

Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.4 billion for the state. North Carolina Education Lottery net proceeds will be used this year to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
