RALEIGH – A former Sanford resident now living in Bloomingdale, Ohio won $367,515 in the July 15 Carolina Cash 5 drawing. Pamala Vargas bought the lucky ticket, which beat odds of 1 in 575,757 to win the jackpot, at the Kangaroo Express on Carthage Street in Sanford.

After required state and federal withholdings, Vargas received a check for $254,321.

Drawings for Carolina Cash 5 are held at 11:22 p.m. each night. The jackpot starts at $50,000 and rolls to a larger amount unless one or more tickets match all five numbers drawn.

Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.4 billion for the state. Net proceeds will be used this year to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
