Brooke Walton of Apex said a lucky win of $100,000 in the Mega Bucks game came just in time to help her and her fiancé have a small wedding and to help buy their first home.

The win ended a lucky weekend for the couple that started with a $100 win on a scratch-off ticket Friday night and the $100,000 win two nights later.

Brooke’s fiancé, Andrew, said the two were on their way to dinner Sunday when they decided to use some of Friday’s winnings to try their luck again at a Circle K on Ten Ten Road. They waited till they got home, however, to scratch their tickets.

“You should have seen her face,” Andrew recalled on Monday. “She was scratching, scratching. And she scratched half, saw that number, and dropped the ticket.”

“It was crazy,” added Brooke. “I said, ‘Is this real?’”

The good luck became real Monday at lottery headquarters. After taxes were withheld, Walton received a check for $69,251. Besides the wedding and new home, the couple plan to donate $1,000 to help fight ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, in honor of a friend who died from the progressive neurodegenerative disease.

The Mega Bucks game started in June 2014 with 12 top prizes of $100,000. As of Monday, two remain to be claimed.

Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. For details on how $275 million in lottery funds have made a difference in Wake County, click on the “Where the Money Goes” tab on the lottery’s website.
