Anthony Robinson of Morrisville has been trying a long time to win the Carolina Cash 5 jackpot so when he woke up Thursday morning and checked the winning numbers on his computer, he had to stop and do a reboot.

What Robinson double-checked was all five of the numbers on his Quick Pick ticket matching all five of winning numbers in the Carolina Cash 5 drawing held the night before. The match, which beat odds of 1 in 575,757, meant he won the jackpot of $281,905.

“I didn’t believe it,” said Robinson, a client services rep for an investment bank, as he collected his winnings Friday. “I turned off my computer and restarted. I was just like, “Wow!’ I was pretty surprised.”

After the required tax withholdings, Robinson received $195,219. He said he planned to use a third for retirement, a third to help buy a new home, and a third to pay bills and have fun, including a possible family trip to the Caribbean.

Robinson, who bought his lucky ticket at the Food Lion on T.W. Alexander Drive in Morrisville, said he likes playing the Cash 5 game because he likes the odds. “I’ve been planning on it for a while,” he said. “I just needed for it to happen.”

Cash 5 jackpots start at $50,000 and grow until they are won. Saturday’s Cash 5 jackpot is $89,000.

Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. For details on how $330 million in lottery funds have made a difference in Wake County, click on the “Where the Money Goes” tab on the lottery’s website.
