A routine trip to the gas station resulted in $1 million win for a Cleveland County couple that could fulfill a dream trip to Australia.

On Thursday, Harvey Lawson, who lives in Kings Mountain, bought a $10 Millionaire 7’s ticket from the Silver Express on East King Street in his hometown.

As Lawson, a superintendent at a weaving and manufacturing company, played the game before he went back to work he told himself, “I’m hoping it’s a winner.” When he saw that he won $1 million, he said he “almost fell under the truck” from excitement.

A $1 million prize can be claimed as an annuity of $50,000 a year for 20 years or as a lump sum of $600,000. On Friday, Lawson chose the cash option, worth $415,503 after required state and federal withholdings.

Lawson said he and his fiancé plan to use the money to go on a trip to Australia.

When Millionaire 7’s began in April 2014, it featured 10 top prizes of $1 million. Two top prizes remain.

Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. For details on how over $45 million in lottery funds have made a difference in Cleveland County, click on the “Where the Money Goes” section of the lottery’s website.
