RALEIGH – Douglas Beasley, a machinist from Trinity, has played the same set of random Carolina Cash 5 numbers every day for the past year. His persistence paid off on when he matched all five numbers in Monday night’s drawing to win the $168,259 jackpot.

Beasley was at home drinking a cup of coffee this morning when he saw his numbers come up on WGHP’s morning news broadcast.

“I guess it was just my lucky day,” Beasley said as he collected his winnings on Tuesday. “I’m going to pay off some bills and take a nice long fishing trip on the coast. It feels pretty amazing.”

Beasley purchased the lucky $1 ticket at the Econo Mart on U.S. 64 West in Asheboro. After state and federal taxes were withheld, he collected a check for $116,519. He beat odds of 1 in 575,757 to win the jackpot. The jackpot for the Tuesday, Feb. 10 Cash 5 drawing is $50,000.

Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion for the state last year. North Carolina Education Lottery net proceeds will be used this year to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
