RALEIGH – Michael Evans of Oxford plans to use the $100,000 prize he won playing the Mega Bucks game to make repairs to his home and save for the future. He purchased the lucky $5 ticket this morning at Williams Bros. Grocery on Enon Road in Oxford.

“I was in the store scratching the ticket and I thought I’d won a hundred dollars,” Evans said. “When I saw those extra zeroes, I couldn’t believe it. This will really help me beautify my house. It’s a great feeling.”

After state and federal taxes were withheld, Evans received a check for $69,251.

As of Thursday afternoon, two $100,000 top prizes remain to be claimed in the game.

Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.6 billion for the state. Net proceeds will be used this year to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, for school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
