Sean Watson of Columbus County claimed a $227,196 jackpot on Friday that he won in the July 2, Carolina Cash 5 drawing.

Watson bought his entry into the drawing at a lucky gas pump at the Middle River C Store on Old Ocean Highway in Brunswick County. After taxes were withheld, he received $157,333. The odds of winning a Cash 5 jackpot are 1 in 575,757.

His win is the largest by lottery players using a new way in North Carolina to buy tickets for three lottery games, Cash 5, Powerball and Mega Millions. The new service, called Play At The Pump, allows players to purchase entries into the drawings at the gas pump. It is designed as a convenience for someone who wants to play one of the lottery’s jackpot games but doesn’t have time to go into the store.

Watson said that’s exactly why he chose to try the new service after noticing the new option when buying gas. “I am always on the go,” Watson said. “It’s convenient.”

The lottery began offering the service in January using a program provided by Linq3, an Atlanta-based company. The service is available at lottery retailers who choose to offer it to their customers and works in a similar way to buying a car wash at the gas pump. Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion for the state last year. For details on how more than $24 million in lottery funds have made a difference in Columbus County, click on the “Where the Money Goes” tab on the lottery’s website.
