Raleigh – Winston-Salem resident Shirley Mathis is the latest player to claim a big prize playing Carolina Cash 5. Her lucky ticket matched all five numbers in the July 14 drawing to win $172,673.

Mathis purchased her winning ticket at 4 Brothers on Stratford Road in Winston-Salem. After state and federal withholdings, she received a check for $119,576.

The jackpot for tonight’s drawing is $56,000. Odds of winning a Cash 5 jackpot are 1 in 575,757.

Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. North Carolina Education Lottery net proceeds were used last year to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
