Sandro Martinez of Durham said Wednesday his $100,000 win in the Millionaire 7’s game will help him buy back-to-school supplies for his five kids and take the whole family on a beach trip.

The lucky win came Tuesday when Martinez, an electrician, stopped at Tommy’s Mini Mart on Cole Mill Road in Durham to get a drink. He tried his luck with three scratch-off tickets, decided to try one more time and won the $100,000.

“I’m very happy,” Martinez said Wednesday as he collected his check. After federal and state tax withholdings, he received a check for $69,253.

The Millionaire 7’s game went on sale in April 2014 with 10 top prizes of $1 million and eight prizes of $100,000. As of Wednesday afternoon, three more $1 million prizes and two more $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed. Tickets cost $10 each.

Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. North Carolina Education Lottery net proceeds were used to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
