RALEIGH – Lumberton resident Kimberly Brewer said she plans to use the $100,000 prize she won playing the new Mega Bucks game to pay off her mortgage and her car.

Brewer, who works for Smithfield Packing, scratched off the lucky $5 ticket on Saturday after purchasing it at the Minuteman Food Mart on MLK Jr. Drive in Lumberton.

“I was so nervous I was shaking,” Brewer said. “I couldn’t believe it. I still can’t. All I can say is that it came at a good time.”

After state and federal taxes were withheld, Brewer received a check for $69,251.

“I’ve never won anything like this,” Brewer said. “It feels great.”

The Mega Bucks game went on sale on Aug. 4 with 10 top prizes. As of Monday morning, eight more top prizes remain to be claimed in the game.

Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. North Carolina Education Lottery net proceeds were used to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
