Raleigh – Seagrove resident Randy Richardson says that his recent Carolina Cash 5 win will help him take a dream vacation across the country on a train. His Quick Pick ticket matched all five numbers in the Aug. 2 drawing to win the $487,632 jackpot.

“That’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Richardson said. “I want to see the country. I’ll probably buy a new camera so I can take pictures along the way.”

Richardson purchased his lucky $1 ticket from Murphy Oil USA on East Dixie Drive in Asheboro. He learned of his big win on Wednesday when he checked his numbers at a local store.

“I had the ticket in the house for days,” Richardson said. “I had no idea that I had won anything. It’s still sinking in, but it feels wonderful.”

After state and federal taxes were withheld, Richardson received a check for $337,685. He also plans to use a portion of his winnings to purchase a new car and make some home improvements.

Tonight’s Carolina Cash 5 jackpot is $136,000.

Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. North Carolina Education Lottery net proceeds were used to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
