Raleigh – William Beddick, a home renovator from Winston-Salem, says that he plans to use the $200,000 top prize he won playing the King’s Ransom game to help his family and start his own renovation business.

Beddick purchased the lucky $5 ticket on Wednesday night at the Quality Mart on Haynes Mall Boulevard in Winston-Salem.

“I scratched off the ticket when I got home,” Beddick said. “When I saw I had won big, I went right over to see my family to tell them the good news. It feels fantastic. This is really going to set me up for the next stage of my life.”

After state and federal taxes were withheld, Beddick received a check for $138,501.

The King’s Ransom game went on sale on July 2 with four top prizes. As of Thursday afternoon, two more top prizes remain to be claimed in the game.

Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. North Carolina Education Lottery net proceeds were used to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
