A Charlotte retiree’s instinct to buy a pair of $5 Diamonds and Dollars tickets won him $200,000.

Two weeks ago, Patrick Urbanski bought a ticket for the game at the Kangaroo Express on Rea Road in Charlotte, and he won $50.

“Something told me to get two more,” he recalled. “It was just the right place at the right time.”

Urbanski said his after-tax winnings of $138,501 would allow him to pay bills and travel.

Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. For details on how $297 million in lottery funds have made a difference in Mecklenburg County, click on the “Where the Money Goes” tab on the lottery’s website.
