For Kristi Spruill of Fayetteville, a split second decision turned lucky after she bought a Powerball ticket that won $100,000.

Spruill, a military logistics coordinator, got back from an assignment in Afghanistan in March. She said she usually doesn’t play Powerball, but decided to buy a ticket for the December 16th drawing on a “whim”.

At first, Spruill thought she had only won $300 to $400, but when she looked up the numbers she was in shock. “Oh my goodness, woo-hoo!” Spruill said of her reaction, “I kept checking my phone and checking my ticket”.

The $100,000 prize occurred because Spruill purchased a $3 Power Play ticket. Her Quick Pick ticket matched four of the five white balls and the red Powerball, but doubled from $50,000 to $100,000 when the 2X multiplier was drawn for Power Play tickets.

Spruill claimed her prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, she received $69,250. She says she plans to use the money to pay off her credit card bills. She bought the winning Powerball ticket at B’s Tobacco Food Mart on North Main Street in Hope Mills.

Spruill says she already has a ticket for Wednesday’s Powerball drawing. The jackpot has reached $450 million with an estimated lump sum of $275.4 million.

Ticket sales made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. For details on how over $155 million in lottery funds have made a difference in Cumberland County, click on the “Where the Money Goes” section of the lottery’s website.
