Daniel Russell of Hubert had time on his side when he headed to his chiropractic appointment Thursday afternoon, so he decided to stop and get a Crossword Money Multiplier scratch-off ticket. That ticket ended up being worth $100,000.

Russell, a building superintendent, didn’t realize exactly how much he won at first.

“There were so many words to match I just wasn’t sure,” Russell said. “I just knew I needed to come to Raleigh.”

He learned how much he won Monday when he claimed his prize at lottery headquarters. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $69,251. He plans to use the money to help his family.

Russell bought the $5 ticket at the Kangaroo Express on East Main Street in Havelock.

Russell won the last of eight $100,000 prizes. With the last prize won, the lottery will begin steps to end the game.

Ticket sales from games like Crossword Money Multiplier made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $634 million for the state last year.
