A routine cup of coffee turned into more than just a pick-me-up, after Ray and Varlia Powell of Apex bought a winning Cash 5 ticket worth $220,588.

The Powells said they normally start their day buying a cup of coffee and checking their Cash 5 numbers. They learned they had won the Cash 5 jackpot on Feb. 20.

When the couple realized they had a winning ticket, they couldn’t believe their good luck. “I started crying, shouting, and thanking God,” Varlia said.

Ray is a landscaper, and Varlia is a patient care tech at Rex Hospital. The couple claimed the prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings they took home $152,757. The couple plans to make a donation to their church and use the rest of the money to pay bills.

They bought the $1 winning ticket at Compare Foods on East Williams Street in Apex.

Ticket sales from games like Cash 5 made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. For details on how more than $331 million in lottery funds have made a difference in Wake County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
