An ordinary shift turned extraordinary for taxi driver Vernell Morrison after he won the $170,359 Cash 5 jackpot.

Morrison was waiting for a customer in High Point when he realized he had the winning ticket for Wednesday’s drawing. He was so shocked he started to tear up. “I just kept saying, ‘Come on this can’t be real, this can’t be real,’” Morrison said.

Once his win started to sink in, Morrison was so excited he stayed up all night. He claimed the jackpot Thursday morning at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he received $117,973. He plans to use some of the money to go on a cruise.

Morrison bought the $1 winning Quick Pick ticket at the NuGo Convenience Mart & Grill on Prospect Street in High Point.

Ticket sales from games like Cash 5 made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year.
