Winning the $229,402 Cash 5 jackpot came as a surprise to Linda Beane of Asheboro, after her husband forgot to tell her that he bought her a ticket for the March 12, drawing.

Beane got a call after the drawing from her sister saying someone won the Cash 5 jackpot in Asheboro, that’s when her husband remembered he got her a ticket.

“She read off the numbers, and then I read them back,” Bean said. “I started jumping up and down shouting ‘I won, I won!’”

Beane, a Hosiery mill supervisor, claimed the prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $158,861. She plans to use the money for retirement.

Beane’s husband used his own numbers, and bought the $1 winning ticket at the Ready Mart on Fayetteville Street in Asheboro.

Ticket sales from games like Cash 5 made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year.
