Guadalupe Rivera of Sanford is the latest player to win $250,000 playing the new $250,000 Fortune scratch-off game.

Rivera, an equipment operator for the City of Sanford, couldn’t believe his good luck when he scratched his ticket.

“I saw the zeros and had to call my brother to double check,” Rivera said. “I just didn’t believe it.”

Rivera claimed the prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After federal and state tax withholdings, he received $173,126.

Rivera bought the $5 ticket at the Value Mart on Carthage Street in Sanford.
$250,000 Fortune launched in April with five top prizes of $250,000. Three top prizes remain.

Ticket sales from games like $250,000 Fortune made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year.
