Sharon and Johnnie Williams got a lesson in luck when they won $100,000 playing the new 10th Anniversary Millions scratch-off game.

Sharon is a high school teacher and her husband, Johnnie, is a criminal magistrate. Sharon went to get a ticket for the Powerball drawing last Wednesday and decided to get several scratch-off tickets as well.

When she started scratching and saw she had matching numbers she couldn’t believe it. “My first reaction was, ‘Oh my God, did I just win $100,000?’” Sharon said.

Sharon checked the ticket multiple times before rushing home to call her husband.

“At first I thought it was bad news when I got the call,” Johnnie said. After Sharon told him about the win, his first feelings were relief that they won some money and gratitude that his wife didn’t crash the car.

The couple claimed the prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After state and federal tax withholdings, they took home $69,253. They plan to use some of the money to renovate their home.

Sharon bought the $10 ticket at the Lee Street Quickstop on East Lee Street in Greensboro.

10th Anniversary Millions launched in April with four prizes of $1 million and six prizes of $100,000. All $1 million prizes and four $100,000 prizes remain.

Ticket sales from games like 10th Anniversary Millions helped raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. For details on how over $207.8 million in lottery funds has made a difference in Guilford County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
